In his youth Bernard Cyril Freyberg was a champion swimmer, a talent that was to stand him in good stead at Gallipoli when he won the DSO for swimming ashore from his ship to set diversionary flares. This photograph shows him on the diving board at the Te Aro Baths, Oriental Bay, Wellington, probably before the First World War.
