The ploughman and his team of horses were important in the hierarchy of farm and station life in the 19th century. Larger properties employed many ploughmen, often on a permanent basis. Here, eight teams of horses are in the process of ploughing a 160-hectare paddock in South Canterbury, which would previously have been uncultivated tussockland. It was likely to have been sown with turnips for stock feed.
