The 7,290-hectare Whangamarino wetland in the Waikato has tens of thousands of game birds living in its swamps and channels. Some 730 hectares are owned and managed by the Auckland/Waikato Fish & Game Council, with a similar sized area privately owned. From the 1960s acclimatisation societies and some hunters began purchasing wetlands to preserve habitats.
