New Zealand has been unable to export apples to Australia since 1921 because of the presence of fireblight. New Zealand growers insist that the disease cannot be spread by mature fruit, and have periodically lobbied the government to call for an end to the ban. These two Central Otago apple growers, Wayne McIntosh (left) and Jeremy Hiscock, were part of a group that made their concerns known to Parliament in 2005.
