Head gardener Thomas Lewis waters plants in the conservatory of the Mansion House on Cheviot Hills Station, North Canterbury. The station was owned by William ‘Ready Money’ Robinson and at its biggest grazed up to 100,000 sheep. As well as the head gardener it employed two garden hands. In the 1890s there were 25 permanent hands, with around 80 shearers employed at shearing time.
