Same site, different trees

These trees have been grown on the same site under identical conditions, but those on the right are spindly and malformed compared with those on the left. In this case, the difference can be traced to the original plant stock. However, variations in plantation trees are common, and researchers have helped develop timber grading systems to ensure the correct wood is used for a particular purpose.
