Tobacco bales

Tobacco bales

Bales of tobacco await processing at the W. D. & H. O. Wills factory in Wellington. Local cigarette manufacturing began in 1919 when a joint venture of British and New Zealand interests set up the factory. By the early 1930s, 90% of New Zealand’s tobacco crop was grown in the Nelson region. Bales were shipped to Wellington.
