Wetland game birds: pūkeko

Often known as swamp hens, West Coast pheasants or ‘pooks’, pūkeko are found in damp areas throughout New Zealand. Their flight is short and ungainly, and they are easy to shoot, although little targeted by hunters. Their call is a screech.
