Whakaari (White Island) in the Bay of Plenty contains one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes. In the past it was an important source of sulfur for the manufacture of superphosphate. Mining ended after 10 men were killed in a landslide in 1914. Mining resumed in 1923, but ceased in the 1930s.
