One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill

Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) is an Auckland landmark. Once the site of a substantial , it is visible from many parts of the city. The obelisk was erected for the city’s centenary celebrations in 1940. Part of a bequest by Sir John Logan Campbell – one of Auckland’s founders – it commemorates his admiration for Māori. The nearby pine tree was removed in 2001, after it was damaged by Māori activists who believed an exotic tree was inappropriate for the site.
