The varroa bee mite has dealt a severe blow to beekeeping in New Zealand. It is widespread in the North Island, and by 2007 had infected some hives in the northern South Island. This worker bee has a small, dark, oval mite attached to its back. Mites can overtake and destroy a hive. Control methods using naturally occurring bacteria are being investigated.
