One early role of the Department of Agriculture was to inspect hives for American foulbrood disease and order the destruction of infected hives. Another role was to demonstrate modern beekeeping. A model bee farm was set up on the Ruakura government farm in 1905, and this exhibit was displayed at the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906–7.
