This milking shed at Kahouri Bridge, Stratford, around 1890, was a distinct improvement on open-air milking. It provided shelter and a number of bails in which the cows could be restrained – necessary for animals new to the shed. This six-bail shed has several people doing the milking, a small railed yard next to it, and, beside the young girl in the foreground, a heap of cow manure that has been cleared from the yard and thrown over the fence.
