Grass carp were introduced to New Zealand in the late 1960s for their potential in biological control of aquatic weeds growing in farm drains. Trials using grass carp have successfully reduced weeds in some lakes. It is thought that the species cannot naturally reproduce in New Zealand and it is only found in places where it has been liberated for weed control. Stocks of the species are kept in a hatchery.
