Three rifles still used by a South Canterbury hunter demonstrate the evolution in guns. The oldest (right) is a Winchester lever-action rifle, probably dating from the 1890s. The Lee Enfield .303 (centre) was the army’s standard service rifle in both world wars. Army surplus guns were used by many hunters. The bolt-action rifle with telescopic sight (left) is the one most often used today.
