Alder shelter belt

The alder (Alnus species) is moderately frost-resistant, drought-tolerant and fast-growing. Its deep roots and ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen makes it less competitive with nearby crops for nutrients and moisture than some other tree species. Consequently alders need little root pruning.
