Cleared land with remnant of bush

The widespread felling of native forest to create farmland removed most of the natural shelter. This farm in 1906 has preserved a remnant of bush. Many of today’s hill country farms are attempting to re-create stands of native bush, especially on sites less suitable for grazing.
