Developed for use in the North Island hill country, the huntaway is now found throughout New Zealand – largely because of its success in dog trials.

The earliest references I can find to the huntaway as a type of working dog and as a category in dog trials are predominantly South Island based. see: http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=q&hs=1&r=1&results=1&t=0&txq=huntaway&pbq=&dafdq=&dafmq=&dafyq=&datdq=&datmq=&datyq=1890&tyq=&o=25&sf=&ssnip=&ssnip=on&x=39&y=8&e=-----1890--25--11----0huntaway-- Of 16 unique results (20 total) prior to 1891, all but one are in South Island newspapers.
