Brown teal or pāteke were once common all over New Zealand, but they have been wiped out from most areas by rats, cats, stoats and other predators. Since the 1980s the little ducks have been bred in captivity and released at various sites. These brown teal were released at Port Charles on the Coromandel Peninsula in 2006. They have a good chance of becoming established, as predators are controlled in the area.
