Broadleaved shrublands and scrub dominate in areas with moderate to high rainfall and relatively fertile soils. Broadleaved shrublands are visible from a distance – they are bright green, and have a relatively even canopy without tall emergent trees. They usually include a range of small trees and shrubs, including māhoe, leafy coprosmas, wineberry, rangiora and five-finger in lowland situations. Kāmahi, pigeonwood, pepperwood and broadleaf are more common at higher altitudes.
