Divaricating growth form

Mingimingi (Coprosma propinqua) is a divaricating shrub – it has small leaves and many interlacing, wide-angled branches. New Zealand has 60 shrub species that exhibit this form, as well as a number of trees that begin life this way. Why this habit evolved in some plants is a matter for conjecture.
