Kopuatai Peat Dome lies between the Piako and Waihou rivers on the Hauraki Plains, in the Waikato. At 10,201 hectares it is the largest freshwater wetland in New Zealand, and the largest dome bog in a natural state. The rounded surface results when the greatest peat growth is in the centre. The central dome rises a few metres above the surrounding land and drains water away in all directions. Before the area became a wetland management reserve, there were attempts to drain parts and turn the surrounding shrublands into pasture.
