Soil surveyors

A DSIR soil team poses in the field in 1929. From left, Leslie Grange, Hartley Ferrar, J. A. Hurst and Norman Taylor. Ferrar’s surveying work in Egypt, and later in Northland, inspired other members of the group. Grange was the first director of the DSIR Soil Survey division (later Soil Bureau), between 1936 and 1952, and Taylor succeeded him (1952–62).
