The Mahoenui giant wētā was classified as ‘nationally endangered’ in 2005. It was first discovered in 1962 in tawa forest remnants in the King Country, and was only scientifically described in 1999. Later generations have been bred in captivity. Attempts to establish more populations have been made by moving them to other reserves and nearshore islands.
