Extinct geyser

Extinct geyser

Carl Leonard, a guide at Whakarewarewa, examines the site of the extinct Papakura geyser in 1986. The geyser last erupted in 1979. Growing concern about the loss of geysers during these years eventually led to the closing of all bores for domestic hot water within 1.5 kilometres of Whakarewarewa’s Pōhutu geyser.
