These kohekohe trees on Mt Karioi in the Waikato have been almost completely stripped of foliage by possums. Kohekohe (Dysoxylum spectabile) is a favourite food for possums, which eat the leaves, flowers and fruit, working their way down from the top of the canopy. Heavily browsed trees often die, and entire crops of seedlings can be eaten out in a season.
