Most flowering trees have flat leaves with an elliptical or oblong shape. They are known as broadleaf trees – in contrast with conifers, which typically have narrow needle-like leaves or tiny scale-like leaves pressed close to their branchlets.
The three branchlets on the left are conifers – they have scale-like or needle leaves. The other twigs (centre and right) are from broadleaf trees.
