Kōrero: Weeds of the bush

Banana passionfruit

Banana passionfruit

Banana passionfruit (Passiflora mollissima) smothers native bush (left) at Queen Charlotte Sound, Marlborough. Individual plants can climb higher than 10 metres and spread over 100 square metres. The flowers are pink, and the fruit, which ripen from green to yellow like bananas, grow 5–10 centimetres long. These climbing plants threaten native bush, smothering trees and shrubs away from the usual domain of weeds – the bush edge and open areas.
