Cave search and rescue

A training exercise known as ‘the deep cave SAREX’ (search and rescue exercise) is held every three years. The event attracts cavers from around New Zealand. Its purpose is to ensure that police, air force and cave rescue personnel gain experience, increase their skills, and test equipment. A scenario is described and the participants follow rescue procedures to find and retrieve the ‘victims’. In 2004 the event was held in the Bulmer Cavern, in north-west Nelson. The team members pictured have gathered to make a cup of tea after completing the exercise.
