A training exercise known as ‘the deep cave SAREX’ (search and rescue exercise) is held every three years. The event attracts cavers from around New Zealand. The purpose is to ensure that the police, air force and cave rescue personnel gain experience, increase their skills, and test equipment. A scenario is described and then participants follow rescue procedures to find and retrieve the ‘victims’. In 2004 the event was in the Bulmer Cavern, in north-west Nelson. The team members (pictured) have gathered to make a cup of tea after completing the exercise.
