Forbes’ parakeet

Forbes’ parakeet

Forbes’ parakeet is found only on the Chatham Islands, where it is confined to two tiny islands – Māngere and Little Māngere/Tapuaenuku. It is classified as nationally endangered. There are few Forbes’ parakeets, so they have been interbreeding with red-crowned parakeets. Without intervention to separate the two species, hybridisation may make Forbes’ parakeet extinct.
