Euglena (inset) is a single-cell alga. Like other algae, it can grow excessively (algal bloom). This forms a green scum, such as on the edge of this pond. Large masses of Euglena are often found in sewage oxidation ponds and other highly fertile waterways such as farm drainage ditches.
