The Phar Lap Raceway at Washdyke is the home of the Timaru Racing Club. The racecourse is named after Australasia’s most famous racehorse, born at nearby Seadown. Phar Lap raced mainly in Australia, winning 37 of his 51 starts, including the 1930 Melbourne Cup and the 1930 and 1931 Cox Plates. He died in mysterious circumstances (possibly poisoned) in California in 1932. A bronze statue of Phar Lap was installed at the raceway in 2009.
