Dr Upali Manukulasuriya (better known to his Taumarunui patients as Dr Manu) emigrated to New Zealand about 1970, one of a number of Sri Lankan professionals who arrived around this time. He became a spokesperson for the United Sri Lanka Association in 1983, the year it was formed.
