The longjaw galaxias (Galaxias prognathus) is easily distinguished from other species in the family by its jutting lower jaw and upturned mouth. It is only found in the South Island, mainly in rivers of the Southern Alps. An isolated group also lives in tributaries of the lower Kakanui River in North Otago.
