The kōaro (Galaxias brevipinnis) favours clear, swift, flowing boulder streams and is widespread throughout New Zealand. It is also present on the Chatham, Auckland and Campbell islands, and in south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. The first species of galaxiid to be described, the giant kōkopu (Galaxias argenteus), was likened to the Milky Way because of its galaxy of spots – also a feature of the other species.
