A soldier holds a Polish child, Pahīatua

Members of the military forces helped the orphans settle into a camp at Pahīatua, where they were housed along with their caregivers. New Zealanders were touched by the plight of the orphans, and turned out to wave to the young refugees leaving Wellington for Pahīatua.
