Kōrero: Flax and flax working

New Zealand memorial, Canberra

New Zealand memorial, Canberra

The handles of a flax kete (basket) symbolise the close relationship between New Zealand and Australia in this bronze memorial, unveiled in 2001. The proverb ‘Māu tēnā kīwai o te kete, māku tēnei’ (Each of us at a handle of the basket) was the inspiration for the memorial. It recalls how Australians and New Zealanders have shared the load of warfare, serving side by side at Gallipoli during the First World War and in later battles.
