One of the most successful New Zealanders overseas is the tiny freshwater mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum. It has colonised streams in Britain, Europe and North America. Although small, the snail can have a great effect on a stream’s ecology. It reproduces rapidly, and hundreds of thousands can live in a small space, eating out all the food required by the local native species.
