Raupo school reader

Raupo school reader

Old Puhoi was published in 1937 by A. H. & A.W. Reed as number 18 in their series of Raupo school readers. These were short books (in this case 19 pages) which cost about twopence to print and sold for fourpence or fivepence. The Raupo name and the colophon was a reference to the Māori name for reeds, and was here proudly displayed on the cover along with a Māori tiki motif. Following their success with James Cowan's Tales of the Maori bush, the Reeds were keen on publishing Māori legends and history.
