The Ballinger Belt

The Ballinger Belt

Outside of horse racing this is New Zealand's oldest sporting trophy. It was first presented in 1873 in an annual shooting competition for the country's 'champion shot'. In 1907 Arthur Ballinger won the belt for the third time, which meant he was entitled to keep it. Instead he donated it to the National Rifle Association and it was renamed the Ballinger Belt.
