The coins displayed are New Zealander James Berry's successful designs for the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50-cent coins, along with the new design for the 20 cent coin which was issued in 1990 (right, middle row). Englishman Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graced the obverse ('heads') side of all the coins, each of which featured a unique design on the reverse side: a fern frond (1 cent), a kōwhai branch in flower (2 cents), a tuatara basking on a rock (5 cents), a koruru or Māori carved head (10 cents), a kiwi with a fern (20 cents) and Captain James Cook's ship the Endeavour (50 cents).
