
In the 19th and early 20th centuries people often self-diagnosed and treated health conditions, sometimes with the aid of books. The Ladies' handbook of home treatment (published in 1905) provided an index of symptoms of women's and children's ailments and explained what the author described as the 'best modern methods' for treating them.
