The Māori King Tawhiao established Te Peeke o Aotearoa in 1886; he was probably its organiser and manager. The bank operated from 1886 until about 1905. This is the one of the very few surviving bank notes. Te Peeke o Aotearoa was one of a number of private issuers of currency – colonial traders such as John Jones and James Macandrew similarly issued promissory notes.
