Unlike Irish Catholics in New Zealand, Scottish Presbyterians didn’t establish a school system to perpetuate their culture. However, secondary schools were founded by the Presbyterian Church during and after the First World War, because the ‘Bible in schools’ movement had failed to give the Christian religion a place in the state education system. The dux medal of St Andrew’s College, Christchurch, bears the cross of Scotland’s patron saint.
