Kōrero: Logging native forests

This low nursing chair was made in 1856 by Robert Sutherland, probably for his wife when she was breastfeeding. Sutherland was a Scotsman who settled at Waitepeka in South Otago. He used a traditional Scottish pattern and may have brought parts of the chair with him from Scotland – some sections are made from British beech. However, the seat is kahikatea and the dowel rails bracing the legs are mānuka.
