Barbara Scott of New Plymouth's Greenwood Archers is shown after a successful 2012 Queen's Birthday tournament in Whanganui. After setting a New Zealand record in the 50 metre shoot, and getting four qualifying scores for the upcoming world championships, Scott described it as the best shooting she'd ever done. Compound bows, of the kind Scott is holding, were developed in the 1960s, and are more often used than recurve bows. The system of pulleys and cables gives an archer a mechanical advantage, reducing the strength needed. Arrows shot from compound bows travel faster and further and are more likely to hit the target.
