The settlers of Nelson were keen for their mineral-rich province to be examined by a geologist. Hochstetter and Haast set off for Nelson in July 1859. Over the next two months they examined many localities in Nelson and Marlborough, especially places where gold, cold and copper were being worked. Gold had been discovered two years earlier in the Collingwood area, and miners guided them to localities where the bones of extinct birds had been found in caves. They excavated some complete moa skeletons.
