The New Zealand fur seal population is expanding, and the number of breeding sites is increasing. At Cape Palliser in 1991, fur seals bred in the North Island for the first time since they were depleted by Māori sealing. They also breed in southern Australia. Haul-out (resting) sites are most populous in July–August. Kaikōura Peninsula and Cape Foulwind are two of the most accessible spots to watch fur seals.
