In this three-dimensional view of the seabed south-west of New Zealand, depths are indicated by different colours. The deepest part is the 6,000-metre deep Puysegur Trench (purple). Here, oceanic crust of the Australian Plate dives beneath the Pacific Plate. It is a mirror image of the Kermadec Trench to the north-east.
