Most early settlers came from northern Germany – Mecklenburg, Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Hessen, Holstein, and West Prussia. Other early groups included Bohemians and Pomeranians. As Germany’s boundaries have varied so much, some of these areas now lie in other countries.
